There are two parts to the Toronto Police Interview: Essential Competency Interview (ECI) and The local Focus Interview (LFI)
1) Essential Competency Interview (ECI)
The TPS Essential Competency Interview (ECI) is the first stage of the Toronto Police interview process. This critical step evaluates your ability to demonstrate key core competencies through real-life examples, often drawn from your personal, academic, or work experience.
At anEDGE, our experienced law enforcement interview coaches work with you one-on-one to master this stage using the STAR method—a structured approach that ensures you clearly present:
Situation and Task: What happened and what your role was
Actions: What you specifically did
Results: What the outcome was and what you learned
Build Strong Core Competency Responses
Our coaching goes beyond surface-level preparation. We help you identify strong examples from the last 2–3 years of your life that reflect the Essential Competencies expected by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). These include:
Communication
Self-Control
Problem Solving
Decision Making
Relationship Building
Flexibility and Adaptability
You’ll be guided to select impactful stories where you were directly responsible for the outcome. This ensures you can confidently speak to your behaviour, judgment, and performance under pressure.
Personalized Mentorship That Gets Results
Your anEDGE coach is a former law enforcement professional who understands what Toronto Police recruiters are looking for. We provide honest feedback and structured practice to help you:
Choose the right examples
Structure your answers effectively
Speak with confidence during your TPS ECI Interview
With targeted coaching and expert support, you’ll walk into your Toronto Police Service Essential Competency Interview fully prepared and ready to stand out

2) Local Focus Interview (LFI)
What to Expect in the TPS Local Focus Interview (LFI)
During your TPS LFI, you can expect questions that explore both your background and your understanding of the Toronto community and the police service itself. Sample questions may include:
Tell me about yourself.
What are your strengths and weaknesses?
What do you know about the Toronto Police Service?
Who is the Chief of Police?
How many divisions or districts are there?
What area does TPS serve?
You may also be asked to reflect on current social and community issues relevant to policing in Toronto, such as:
Truth and Reconciliation
Violence on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission)
Anti-Black Racism
The Missing and Missed Persons Report
Housing insecurity and homelessness
Hate crimes and hate incidents
How anEDGE Prepares You for the TPS LFI?
Our coaching team—made up of seasoned police professionals and recruiters—will help you:
Craft compelling, authentic responses to background and community-based questions
Research and understand TPS operations, divisions, leadership, and community initiatives

If you are serious about a career in law enforcement, then look no further because the team at AnEDGE has been an incredible help. If you have a lot of good work and life experience it can be difficult at times articulating the competencies Law Enforcement agencies look for in the STAR format. Thanks to anEDGE I felt I was well prepared going into every interview and had the best support at every step of the process. They were very flexible and accommodating in scheduling times to meet over teams. I cannot thank Gerald, Kevin, and the entire team enough for their support.

Grant From Manitoba – if you are motivated to begin your career in policing and know you have great work/life experience but are not sure how to articulate your competencies in the STAR format, you’ve come to the right place. I reached out to anEDGE, thinking I had weeks to prepare, and found out days later my interview would be in 7 days. I was still trying to figure out if I should spend the money on the process. I have to say that the decision to work with Kevin and Paul offered invaluable advice and assistance in preparing for the RCMP interview. If you have any doubt, take advantage of the free consultation and you will not regret it—best of luck to all applicants and many thanks to Kevin and Paul at anEDGE.

I hired anEDGE to help me prepare for my panel interview, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the experience. Elaine, my designated mentor, was absolutely fantastic. With just three weeks to prepare, she guided me every step of the way, and thanks to her expertise, I was able to walk into the interview confident and well-prepared. One of the most valuable aspects of the process was the mock panel interview anEDGE conducts beforehand. Not only did I receive insightful feedback, but it also gave me a chance to face my nerves head-on before the real thing. I highly recommend anEDGE and Elaine for anyone looking to take their interview preparation to the next level.
