Our Toronto Police Interview Coaching program is structured to prepare you to excel in the Interview, including a mock interview with Police Recruiters

There are two parts to the Toronto Police Interview: Essential Competency Interview (ECI) and The local Focus Interview (LFI)

1) Essential Competency Interview (ECI)

The TPS Essential Competency Interview (ECI) is the first stage of the Toronto Police interview process. This critical step evaluates your ability to demonstrate key core competencies through real-life examples, often drawn from your personal, academic, or work experience.

At anEDGE, our experienced law enforcement interview coaches work with you one-on-one to master this stage using the STAR method—a structured approach that ensures you clearly present:

  • Situation and Task: What happened and what your role was

  • Actions: What you specifically did

  • Results: What the outcome was and what you learned

Build Strong Core Competency Responses

Our coaching goes beyond surface-level preparation. We help you identify strong examples from the last 2–3 years of your life that reflect the Essential Competencies expected by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP). These include:

  • Communication

  • Self-Control

  • Problem Solving

  • Decision Making

  • Relationship Building

  • Flexibility and Adaptability

You’ll be guided to select impactful stories where you were directly responsible for the outcome. This ensures you can confidently speak to your behaviour, judgment, and performance under pressure.

2) Local Focus Interview (LFI)

What to Expect in the TPS Local Focus Interview (LFI)

During your TPS LFI, you can expect questions that explore both your background and your understanding of the Toronto community and the police service itself. Sample questions may include:

  • Tell me about yourself.

  • What are your strengths and weaknesses?

  • What do you know about the Toronto Police Service?

  • Who is the Chief of Police?

  • How many divisions or districts are there?

  • What area does TPS serve?

You may also be asked to reflect on current social and community issues relevant to policing in Toronto, such as:

  • Truth and Reconciliation

  • Violence on the TTC (Toronto Transit Commission)

  • Anti-Black Racism

  • The Missing and Missed Persons Report

  • Housing insecurity and homelessness

  • Hate crimes and hate incidents
