What Is the Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test?

The Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT) is a job-related critical-thinking examination used during recruitment by Alberta municipal police services. It evaluates whether an applicant has the reasoning abilities needed to complete police recruit training and perform effectively as a police officer. The APCAT does not test knowledge of a particular academic subject. Instead, it assesses judgement, observation, learning and memory recall, written communication, and problem analysis.

APCAT Exam Format

  • 120 multiple-choice questions
  • Approximately three hours in total
  • 30 minutes to study a Pre-Test Booklet
  • Two hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination
  • 70% required to pass—84 correct answers out of 120

The Pre-Test Booklet is removed after the 30-minute study period and cannot be referenced during the examination. A portion of the APCAT questions assesses how accurately you learned and remembered that information. Applicants should always confirm current testing, registration and retesting requirements directly with their chosen police service. Calgary Police Service APCAT information

What Does the APCAT Test?

The APCAT evaluates five cognitive abilities considered important for police recruit training and effective police work. Your practice should cover each area rather than concentrating only on general reasoning questions.

Judgement

Evaluate situations, identify the most important information and select an appropriate course of action based on the circumstances presented.

Observation Skills

Notice important details, recognize differences and accurately interpret information about people, objects, locations or events.

Learning and Memory Recall

Learn information presented in the Pre-Test Booklet and accurately recall important facts and details after the booklet has been removed.

Written Communication

Understand written information, recognize clear and accurate language, and interpret the meaning of sentences and passages.

Problem Analysis

Break down complex information, identify patterns and relationships, evaluate possible conclusions and solve problems using logical reasoning.

Prepare in Stages With Mini, Competency and Full-Length APCAT Exams

The anEDGE platform allows you to build your abilities gradually instead of beginning immediately with a complete exam. Move from focused practice to realistic full-length simulations as your performance improves.

1

Build Confidence With Mini Exams

Begin with shorter APCAT practice exams that allow you to become familiar with the question styles, practise regularly and improve without completing a full-length assessment every time.

2

Strengthen Individual Competencies

Use competency-specific exams to focus separately on judgement, observation, learning and memory recall, written communication, and problem analysis. This helps you identify and improve weaker areas.

3

Progress to Full-Length Timed Exams

Combine all five competencies in complete APCAT-style practice exams. Develop the pacing, concentration and endurance needed to perform effectively under realistic time limits.

4

Review, Retake and Improve

Review your scores and detailed answer explanations, return to individual competency exams when necessary, and retake randomized practice until your results become consistently strong.

Why APCAT Practice Exams Matter

Knowing the APCAT format is helpful, but successful preparation also requires repeated practice under timed conditions. Mini exams, competency-specific quizzes and full-length simulations each serve a different purpose.

Improve Pacing and Concentration

Timed practice helps you learn how long to spend on each question while developing the concentration needed for a lengthy multiple-choice examination.

Strengthen Learning and Memory Recall

Practising with information that must be studied and recalled later helps prepare you for the APCAT Pre-Test Booklet and memory-based questions.

Identify Weaker Competencies

Individual competency exams reveal whether you need additional work in judgement, observation, memory recall, written communication or problem analysis.

Develop Consistent Performance

Randomized questions require you to apply your reasoning skills on every attempt instead of improving simply because you remember the answers.

Prepare for the Complete Exam Experience

Full-length practice brings the five assessment areas together under realistic time limits, helping you build endurance and become comfortable with the overall testing process.

APCAT Money-Back Pass Guarantee

Applicants to participating Alberta municipal police services may be required to pass the APCAT. Calgary and Edmonton currently require local applicants to pass the examination before submitting their online application. Always confirm the current process with your chosen agency.

The APCAT contains 120 multiple-choice questions. Candidates receive 30 minutes to study a Pre-Test Booklet, followed by two hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination.

You receive 30 minutes to study information contained in a Pre-Test Booklet. The booklet is then removed and cannot be referenced during the examination. Some questions assess how accurately you learned and remembered that information.

Many applicants find the APCAT challenging because it combines five cognitive areas within a lengthy, timed examination. Memory recall, concentration, careful reading and time management can be particularly demanding without preparation.

Begin with mini exams to learn the question styles, use individual competency exams to strengthen weaker areas and then progress to complete timed practice exams. Reviewing explanations and repeating randomized practice can improve both accuracy and pacing.
