APCAT Exam Format at a Glance
The APCAT includes a timed study period followed by a 120-question assessment covering five cognitive and communication abilities required for police work.
Pre-Test Study Booklet
Candidates receive 30 minutes to study information that must later be recalled. The booklet is removed before the multiple-choice portion begins.
120 Multiple-Choice Questions
The APCAT assesses five job-related abilities rather than knowledge of a particular academic subject or police procedures.
2 Hours 15 Minutes
After the study booklet is collected, candidates have two hours and 15 minutes to complete the 120-question assessment.
70% Passing Score
Candidates must achieve at least 84 correct answers out of 120 to meet the published minimum passing standard.
Five-Year Result Validity
A successful APCAT result is generally valid for five years. Confirm current acceptance and transferability with the police service to which you are applying.
Rewrite Waiting Periods
Published guidance generally requires a one-month wait after the first unsuccessful attempt, three months after the second and six months after later attempts. Confirm the current policy with your testing police service.
What Is the Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test?
The Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT) is a job-related critical-thinking examination used during recruitment by Alberta municipal police services. It evaluates whether an applicant has the reasoning abilities needed to complete police recruit training and perform effectively as a police officer. The APCAT does not test knowledge of a particular academic subject. Instead, it assesses judgement, observation, learning and memory recall, written communication, and problem analysis.
APCAT Exam Format
- 120 multiple-choice questions
- Approximately three hours in total
- 30 minutes to study a Pre-Test Booklet
- Two hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination
- 70% required to pass—84 correct answers out of 120

The Pre-Test Booklet is removed after the 30-minute study period and cannot be referenced during the examination. A portion of the APCAT questions assesses how accurately you learned and remembered that information. Applicants should always confirm current testing, registration and retesting requirements directly with their chosen police service. Calgary Police Service APCAT information
What Does the APCAT Measure?
The APCAT evaluates five cognitive abilities considered important for police recruit training and effective police work. Your practice should cover each area rather than concentrating only on general reasoning questions.
Judgement
Evaluate situations, identify the most important information and select an appropriate course of action based on the circumstances presented.
Observation Skills
Notice important details, recognize differences and accurately interpret information about people, objects, locations or events.
Learning and Memory Recall
Learn information presented in the Pre-Test Booklet and accurately recall important facts and details after the booklet has been removed.
Written Communication
Understand written information, recognize clear and accurate language, and interpret the meaning of sentences and passages.
Problem Analysis
Break down complex information, identify patterns and relationships, evaluate possible conclusions and solve problems using logical reasoning.

Why Timed Practice Matters for the APCAT
Knowing the APCAT format is helpful, but successful preparation also requires repeated practice under timed conditions. Mini exams, competency-specific quizzes and full-length simulations each serve a different purpose.
Improve Pacing and Concentration
Timed practice helps you learn how long to spend on each question while developing the concentration needed for a lengthy multiple-choice examination.
Strengthen Learning and Memory Recall
Practising with information that must be studied and recalled later helps prepare you for the APCAT Pre-Test Booklet and memory-based questions.
Identify Weaker Competencies
Individual competency exams reveal whether you need additional work in judgement, observation, memory recall, written communication or problem analysis.
Develop Consistent Performance
Randomized questions require you to apply your reasoning skills on every attempt instead of improving simply because you remember the answers.
Prepare for the Complete Exam Experience
Full-length practice brings the five assessment areas together under realistic time limits, helping you build endurance and become comfortable with the overall testing process.

As for my interview, my coach, Tyra, has been amazing with the direction for my interview, and with her help, I’ve been gaining so much confidence. My interview will be scheduled soon and I’m already feeling close to being prepared.

Exactly the Confidence Boost I Needed
I had a great experience working with anEDGE to prepare for my CBSA interview. I reached out on pretty short notice before my interview, but Paul was flexible with his schedule and made it work, which I really appreciated.
The coaching was personalized, and instead of just giving me answers to memorize, Paul helped me understand how to structure my responses and think through the interview questions. I walked into my interview feeling confident and prepared. I’d definitely recommend anEDGE to anyone getting ready for a law enforcement interview.

Interview coaching and practice
The interview coaching and practice that anEDGE provides is extremely helpful. I had the pleasure of having a 1.5-hour session with Paul, and he was extremely helpful in preparing me for what to expect on my upcoming CBSA interview. The amount of information received is phenomenal, and I would highly recommend these coaching methods to anyone who has a serious interest in law enforcement. The price is more than fair with the amount of information that is given. Overall, anEDGE is an extremely caring company that strives for its clients’ success.

Thank you anEDGE
Thank you so much Kevin, Elaine and the whole organization of anEDGE for helping me to pass the RCMP Suitability interview.
Elaine is an exceptional tutor. I learned exactly how to structure my answers using the STAR method. The practice questions perfectly mirrored the actual RCMP competency based behavioral and situational format. The feedback was honest, direct and highlighted even the small errors in my answers which I never would have noticed. Also, the mock interview really helped me to eliminate all my anxiety before the actual interview. I highly recommend anEDGE to anyone aspiring to a career in law enforcement.

Frequently Asked APCAT Questions
What is the APCAT?
The Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT) is a job-related critical-thinking examination used by Alberta municipal police services. It assesses whether an applicant possesses the cognitive abilities needed for police recruit training and effective police work.
Who is required to take the APCAT?
Applicants to participating Alberta municipal police services may be required to pass the APCAT. Calgary and Edmonton currently require local applicants to pass the examination before submitting their online application. Always confirm the current process with your chosen agency.
How many questions are on the APCAT?
The APCAT contains 120 multiple-choice questions. Candidates receive 30 minutes to study a Pre-Test Booklet, followed by two hours and 15 minutes to complete the examination.
What score is required to pass the APCAT?
You must score at least 70%, equivalent to 84 correct answers out of 120, to pass the APCAT.
What abilities does the APCAT assess?
The APCAT assesses five areas: judgement, observation skills, learning and memory recall, written communication, and problem analysis.
How does the APCAT Pre-Test Booklet work?
You receive 30 minutes to study information contained in a Pre-Test Booklet. The booklet is then removed and cannot be referenced during the examination. Some questions assess how accurately you learned and remembered that information.
Is the APCAT difficult?
Many applicants find the APCAT challenging because it combines five cognitive areas within a lengthy, timed examination. Memory recall, concentration, careful reading and time management can be particularly demanding without preparation.
What is the best way to prepare for the APCAT?
Begin with mini exams to learn the question styles, use individual competency exams to strengthen weaker areas and then progress to complete timed practice exams. Reviewing explanations and repeating randomized practice can improve both accuracy and pacing.
Can I retake the APCAT if I do not pass?
Yes, but mandatory waiting periods apply. Current published guidance begins with a one-month wait after the first unsuccessful attempt and three months after the second, followed by longer waiting periods for later attempts. Confirm the current schedule directly with your testing police service because agency guidance can change.
How long are APCAT results valid?
APCAT results are generally valid for five years and may be accepted by participating Alberta municipal police services. Confirm result validity and transferability with the police service to which you are applying.
Can I take a free APCAT practice test?
Yes. anEDGE provides a free APCAT practice test that introduces the question style and allows you to receive an initial score before purchasing full access.
Is the APCAT administered online or in person?
The APCAT may be offered either online or in person, depending on the police service and available testing schedule. Calgary Police currently publishes both testing options, while other Alberta services may use different arrangements. Confirm the current registration and testing instructions directly with the police service administering your exam.
Do I need to pass the APCAT before applying to an Alberta police service?
Requirements depend on the police service. Calgary and Edmonton currently state that local applicants must write and pass the APCAT before submitting an online application. Applicants applying from outside the area or to another Alberta police service should confirm the current process directly with that organization because recruitment requirements can change.
What happens after I pass the APCAT?
Passing the APCAT satisfies the written cognitive-testing requirement but does not guarantee selection by a police service. A successful result is generally valid for five years and may be accepted by participating Alberta municipal police services. You must then complete the remaining recruitment stages required by your chosen service, which may include application review, fitness testing, interviews, background investigation, medical assessment and psychological assessment.
