Get Ready for One of the Most Important Stages of the RCMP Suitability Process
If you’re preparing for the RCMP attributes evaluation interview (AEI), you’re at a critical stage in the hiring process. This interview is designed to assess whether you have the core competencies, values, and character traits needed to succeed as an RCMP constable.
At anEDGE, we are proud to be Canada’s most successful 1-on-1 RCMP interview coaching company, helping applicants just like you prepare with confidence and perform at their best.
What Is the RCMP Attributes Evaluation Interview (AEI)?
The RCMP attributes evaluation interview is part of the Suitability Interview, which includes two components:
- The Attribute Evaluation Interview (AEI)
- The Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire (RMAQ)
While the RCMP Attributes Evaluation Interview is only one part of the broader RCMP Suitability Interview, which includes these two key components, this blog focuses exclusively on the Attributes Evaluation portion.
The second component—the Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire (RMAQ)—will be addressed in a separate blog post.
The Attribute Evaluation Interview
This portion evaluates your knowledge, skills, and past experiences related to four essential competencies. These are assessed through behavioural interview questions, which ask you to describe how you’ve handled real-life situations in the past.
The competencies being evaluated are:
- Problem Solving
- Teamwork
- Communication
- Self-Control and Composure
These qualities were identified through a detailed analysis of the responsibilities of an RCMP constable. The goal is to determine whether your past behaviour reflects the ability to succeed in policing roles today and in the future.
The Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire (RMAQ)
This part of the process reviews your personal history and life choices to determine if anything in your background may affect your ability to serve with the RCMP.
Key traits evaluated here include:
- Integrity
- Honesty
- Accountability
The RCMP takes a close look at any adverse actions, and assesses their severity, recency, and frequency. Total transparency is expected — trying to hide or downplay an incident will almost always backfire.
How to Prepare for the RCMP Attribute Evaluation Interview
Use the STAR Method
You’ll need to answer behavioural questions clearly and in a structured way. The STAR technique helps you stay focused and organized:
- Situation – Set the scene.
- Task – What needed to be done?
- Action – What steps did you take?
- Result – What was the outcome?
Whenever possible, use examples from the past five years of your life. However, if you have an exceptional experience that falls outside of this timeframe, it is acceptable to include—demonstrates the qualities and competencies being assessed.
Here’s an example (not from the real interview):
“Tell me about a time you had to overcome a major obstacle.”
Instead of giving a vague answer, you’d walk the interviewer through a specific challenge you faced, what you did to solve it, and what you learned from it. Our coaches at anEDGE walk you through real mock interview scenarios like this to help you build confidence and polish your delivery.
What Are the 4 Key RCMP Attributes Being Evaluated?
Let’s break down the four competencies in the RCMP attributes evaluation interview:
- Problem Solving: Can you analyze situations logically, break problems into smaller parts, and make sound decisions? The RCMP is looking for candidates who act decisively while understanding the bigger picture.
- Teamwork: Being a good officer means knowing how to work with others. You’ll need to demonstrate past experiences where you collaborated, resolved conflict, or contributed to a team goal.
- Communication: This isn’t just about speaking clearly — it’s about listening actively, adjusting your message to suit your audience, and keeping calm under pressure.
- Self-Control and Composure: Police officers often face stressful situations. Can you stay calm and professional, even when you’re under pressure or dealing with hostility? The RCMP wants to know you can manage your emotions and stay focused.
