APCAT
Alberta Police Cognitive Abilities Test
The Alberta Police Cognitive Ability Test (APCAT) is a standardized critical-thinking assessment used to evaluate a candidate’s potential to succeed in police recruit training and perform effectively as a police officer in Alberta. Unlike academic exams, the APCAT does not test subject-matter knowledge. Instead, it measures how well you think, reason, observe, and make decisions—the foundational skills required in policing.
The exam consists of 120 multiple-choice questions and is approximately 3 hours in total length. Candidates first receive 30 minutes to review a Pretest Study Booklet, followed by 2 hours and 15 minutes to complete the test. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass.
The APCAT assesses five key areas essential to modern policing:
-
Judgment – making sound decisions under pressure
-
Observation Skills – noticing and interpreting important details
-
Learning & Memory Recall – retaining and applying new information
-
Written Communication – understanding and using clear language
-
Problem Analysis – evaluating information to reach logical conclusions
