The CBSA interview questions that are behavioural based aim to understand how you’ve handled situations in the past, which can be a strong indicator of how you’ll behave in the future. As a career and interview coach, I believe this as we look for good patterns in people’s lives.
The behaviour-based questions used in the CBSA interview are now included in most large organizations and have become a standard part of the interview process.
These questions are answered best in the STAR format (Situation, Task, Action, Result). Examples of behavioural based questions are:
- Tell me about a time when you dealt with a difficult person. How did you handle it?
- Describe a situation where you had to make a quick decision under pressure.
- How do you handle stressful situations, especially if they involve multiple priorities?
- Have you ever been in a position where you needed to enforce rules? How did you approach it?

In recent CBSA interviews, candidates often report that the panel includes situational and scenario-based questions designed to test judgement, professionalism, and decision-making under pressure. Examples include:
• A traveller becomes angry after you refuse their entry. How would you handle the situation?
• You suspect a traveller is hiding information, but you do not yet have proof. What steps would you take?
• During a border inspection, you discover something that may violate regulations. How would you proceed?
• A colleague suggests ignoring a minor rule violation to save time. What would you do?
• A traveller refuses to cooperate with your instructions. How would you de-escalate the situation?
• You must make a quick decision that could significantly impact a traveller. What factors would you consider?
