What Is the RCMP Suitability Interview?

The RCMP Suitability Interview is a formal stage in the regular-member selection process. It helps determine whether an applicant demonstrates the judgement, communication, integrity and personal suitability required of an RCMP officer. Candidates may be asked behavioural questions that require specific examples from their past. Interviewers consider the situation, the applicant’s individual actions, the reasoning behind their decisions and whether they can communicate the experience clearly and with accountability.

Information disclosed in the Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire may also be considered during the suitability assessment. Applicants must be prepared to discuss previous conduct honestly and completely. Effective preparation improves clarity and self-awareness—it should never involve memorizing scripts, minimizing conduct or withholding information. The strongest candidates provide specific evidence, explain their individual decisions and take responsibility for the outcomes.

RCMP Attribute Evaluation Interview and Competencies

The Attribute Evaluation Interview (AEI) is the behavioural component of the RCMP Suitability Interview. It assesses whether an applicant can demonstrate four competencies considered essential for successful performance as an RCMP constable.

Candidates must provide specific examples from their past and clearly explain their individual responsibilities, decisions and actions. The RCMP currently identifies the following four competencies: official RCMP guidance.

Problem Solving

The ability to examine a problem, identify risks and possible solutions, make a timely decision and understand the likely consequences.

Teamwork

The ability to cooperate with others, contribute toward shared objectives and help create an effective and positive team environment.

Communication

The ability to receive and communicate information clearly, adapt your message to the audience and interact effectively with others.

Self-Control and Composure

The ability to manage emotional reactions, remain professional and maintain focus when facing pressure, conflict or continuing stress.

Answering AEI Behavioural Questions

Behavioural questions focus on what you actually did in a past situation—not what you believe you would do hypothetically. The RCMP recommends using the STAR structure:

  • Situation: Briefly establish the circumstances.
  • Task: Explain your responsibility or the problem you faced.
  • Action: Describe the specific decisions and actions you personally took.
  • Result: Explain the outcome and what your actions accomplished.

Your Action should normally be the most detailed part of the answer. Avoid relying entirely on “we”; the interviewer needs to understand your individual contribution.

Regular-Member-Applicant-Questionnaire-RMAQ-Interview

RCMP Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire Interview

The Regular Member Applicant Questionnaire (RMAQ) Interview is the second component of the RCMP Suitability Interview. It helps the RCMP understand whether actions or behaviours from an applicant’s past could affect their suitability to become an RCMP officer.

Honesty and completeness are essential. The RCMP considers the seriousness of past conduct, how recently it occurred and whether it reflects repeated behaviour. Applicants are expected to provide accurate information without withholding, misrepresenting or minimizing relevant facts. Official RCMP RMAQ guidance

What the RMAQ Interview Assesses

  • Honesty and completeness of your disclosures
  • The seriousness and circumstances of past conduct
  • How recently the conduct occurred
  • Whether it represents an isolated incident or repeated behaviour
  • Your present level of judgement, accountability and self-awareness
  • Consistency between your questionnaire and interview responses

How anEDGE Helps You Prepare

  • Organize the relevant facts and chronology clearly
  • Prepare to discuss difficult subjects calmly and directly
  • Explain your decisions without making excuses
  • Demonstrate accountability and what you learned
  • Identify areas that may require clearer explanation
  • Practise responding to appropriate follow-up questions.

RMAQ coaching is not about creating the “right story.” It is about helping you communicate the truth clearly, completely and with genuine accountability.
