What Is the Correctional Officer Entrance Exam?

The Correctional Officer Entrance Exam is an early-stage assessment used by the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) to evaluate whether applicants have the judgment, reasoning ability, and professional decision-making skills required for work in a correctional environment. This exam is designed to assess how candidates interpret information, respond to realistic workplace situations, and make decisions under pressure — all critical skills for correctional officers working in federal institutions across Canada.

Passing the entrance exam is a required step before moving forward in the CSC hiring process. This correctional officer entrance exam is commonly required for federal CSC positions and similar correctional officer hiring processes across Canada. The assessment focuses less on memorization and more on how applicants think, prioritize, and apply judgment in situations involving safety, communication, and ethical responsibility. For many applicants, this style of testing is unfamiliar and can be challenging without proper preparation.

Our Correctional Officer practice exams are built to reflect the structure, difficulty, and decision-making expectations of the real CSC entrance assessment, helping applicants understand what is being evaluated and how to approach the exam with confidence. Understanding how the CSC exam works — and what it is designed to measure — is the first step toward performing well on test day.

What Does the CSC Situational Judgement Test Evaluate?

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) Situational Judgement Test assesses an applicant’s judgment when responding to work-related situations similar to those encountered by Correctional Officers (CX-01).

The scenarios examine how candidates evaluate possible responses involving:

  • The security of the institution and the public

  • The security of staff and offenders

  • Transportation and supervision responsibilities

  • Emergency and safety-related situations

  • Offender accountability

The test also incorporates the principal competencies CSC expects Correctional Officers to demonstrate:

  • Integrity and respect, including CSC values

  • Thinking things through

  • Working effectively with others

  • Showing initiative and being action-oriented

  • Communicating effectively

Rather than testing memorized facts, the SJT requires candidates to judge the effectiveness of possible responses while considering safety, established procedures, professionalism and accountability. anEDGE practice exams provide repeated exposure to realistic correctional workplace scenarios and the response-rating format used in the CSC SJT.

CSC Situational Judgement Test Practice Scenario

For each workplace situation, candidates rate the effectiveness of one or more possible responses using the CSC SJT response scale:

A

Very ineffective

B

Ineffective

C

Neither effective nor ineffective

D

Effective

E

Very effective

Illustrative Practice Scenario

During a routine count, another officer tells you that the count for one living area does not match the written record. The officer suggests submitting the count anyway so the team does not fall behind schedule.

Rate the effectiveness of each response:

Response 1: Submit the count and correct the discrepancy later if necessary.

Suggested rating: A — Very ineffective

Response 2: Recheck the count with the other officer and report the discrepancy through the appropriate institutional channels.

Suggested rating: E — Very effective

Response 3: Wait to see whether someone else notices the discrepancy before taking action.

Suggested rating: B — Ineffective

Why These Ratings Matter

The CSC SJT evaluates how effectively applicants apply judgment, follow procedures, communicate with others and protect institutional safety. Strong responses normally demonstrate accountability, careful decision-making and appropriate use of established reporting procedures. This is an illustrative anEDGE practice scenario and not an actual CSC test question.
