OPP Essential Competency Interview (ECI)

The OPP Essential Competency Interview (ECI) evaluates real examples from your life that demonstrate the seven core competencies the Ontario Provincial Police values. Think about work, school, volunteering, or personal experiences. Recent examples are ideal, but a strong story from a few years ago is better than a weak one from last week.

OPP Competencies assessed: Resiliency, Teamwork, Communication, Problem Solving, Leadership, Inclusivity.

OPP Local Focus Interview (LFI)

The OPP Local Focus Interview evaluates your employment history, volunteer work, and knowledge of the Ontario Provincial Police. You’ll be asked about your past roles, responsibilities, community involvement, and your understanding of the OPP—such as its leadership, commands, and jurisdiction. Common LFI questions include: Tell me about yourself, what are your strengths and weaknesses, what do you know about the OPP, and why do you want to become an OPP officer?

At anEDGE, our OPP Local Focus Interview coaching prepares you to answer these questions with confidence, ensuring you present yourself as a strong and well-prepared candidate.

Frequently Asked Questions

The OPP Interview is considered challenging because it has two structured components: the OPP Essential Competency Interview (ECI) and the OPP Local Focus Interview (LFI). Both assess your skills, character, and alignment with OPP values. With preparation and practice, especially through mock coaching sessions, you can build confidence and increase your chances of success.

To prepare for the OPP Local Focus Interview (LFI), research community issues, learn about Ontario policing, and reflect on your motivation for joining the OPP. Coaching helps you anticipate local focus questions, practice clear answers, and present yourself as a strong candidate

The OPP ECI measures core skills like problem-solving, stress tolerance, communication, teamwork, and self-control. Candidates must provide detailed real-life examples that prove they’ve demonstrated these competencies. Preparation and structured coaching ensure you cover each competency effectively.

Yes. If your answers in the OPP ECI do not demonstrate the required competencies using the STAR method, you may not progress in the hiring process. Coaching helps prevent this by guiding you on how to frame your experiences into strong, competency-based answers

The OPP Interview requires structured, well-prepared answers. Coaching gives you practice with realistic OPP ECI questions and LFI scenarios, feedback on your responses, and strategies to avoid common mistakes. Professional guidance significantly improves interview performance.

Yes. The OPP Essential Competency Interview (ECI) focuses on structured STAR responses to behavioral questions, while the OPP Local Focus Interview (LFI) evaluates your community awareness and motivation. Preparation for both requires different strategies, which coaching can provide

If you do not pass the OPP Interview (ECI or LFI), you may need to wait before reapplying. This waiting period delays your application, which is why many candidates prepare thoroughly with interview coaching to succeed on the first attempt.

The OPP Interview has two main components: the Essential Competency Interview (ECI), which focuses on behavioral examples, and the Local Focus Interview (LFI), which measures motivation and knowledge of community issues. Both are required to advance in the hiring process.

The OPP ECI is a structured, behavioral interview where applicants use the STAR method to demonstrate competencies such as communication, problem-solving, and initiative. It’s designed to test how your past experiences prove you’re ready for policing.

The OPP LFI is designed to evaluate your motivation, values, and awareness of local and provincial policing issues. Questions often explore your personal background, community involvement, and understanding of the OPP’s role.

In the OPP ECI, mistakes include vague answers, forgetting the STAR format, or failing to connect experiences to competencies. In the OPP LFI, candidates often underprepare for community-related questions. Coaching helps avoid these pitfalls.

The STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) is the framework required in the OPP Essential Competency Interview (ECI). It ensures your answers are clear, structured, and demonstrate measurable results.

n the OPP LFI, personal questions should be answered honestly but professionally. Emphasize your motivations, strengths, and community awareness while staying authentic. Coaching helps polish your responses for impact.

The OPP Interview is unique because it includes both the ECI and the LFI, while many municipal police interviews focus mainly on competencies. Preparing specifically for the OPP ensures you meet their higher standards.

The OPP Interview typically has 8–12 questions, divided between the Essential Competency Interview (ECI) and the Local Focus Interview (LFI). The number may vary depending on the panel and applicant.
