Toronto Police Services Interview Coaching you to success
Our Toronto Police Service Interview Coaching program is structured to prepare you to excel in the Interview, including a mock interview with Police Recruiters
There are two parts to the Toronto Police Service Interview:
1) the Local Focus interview and 2) the Essential Competency Interview (ECI).
1) Local Focus Interview (LFI)
In this part, the interviewer will ask about your work history and assess your knowledge of the Toronto Police Service.
During your Toronto Police Service interview, you might or could be asked questions like:
- Tell me about yourself.
- What are your strengths and weaknesses?
- What do you know about the Toronto Police Service?
- Who is the Chief of Police?
- How many divisions/districts are there?
- What is our police jurisdiction?
You might also be asked to reflect on social issues such as:
- Truth and Reconciliation
- Violence on the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC)
- Anti-Black Racism
- The Missing and Missed Persons Report
- Housing and homelessness
- Hate crimes and hate incidents
2) Essential Competency Interview (ECI)
The second part of the Toronto Police Interview is the ECI (Essential Competency Interview) portion, which assesses your core competencies and how you apply them in real-life situations.
The interviewer will expertly use the STAR approach to guide the competency interview, providing you with a clear structure and support throughout.
You’ll be asked to describe the Situations and Tasks you encountered, the specific Actions you took, and finally, the Results you achieved.
Part of our interview coaching is developing your core competencies with you from your past life experiences, your job, and your personal life.
The interview will begin with a request to recall a recent situation or event showing a particular competency needed for the role. It’s essential to choose examples from the last 2-3 years, as the interviewer will ask for detailed accounts, and the more recent the example, the easier it will be to recall specifics.
Remember that the interviewer wants to understand your behaviour when selecting a situation. Pick a story where you were directly involved, and focus on what you did,
Your one-on-one coach and mentor will be crucial in preparing for this portion of the interview. They will review the competencies of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) with you, instilling confidence and helping you urstannded and apply them in your responses.
Competency Based Interview
The competency-based interview is vital to the Toronto Police Service’s selection process and is structured around the specific skills that the Toronto Police Service seeks. The interviewer poses questions tailored to assess your skills, comparing your responses against predetermined criteria to evaluate your suitability for the Toronto Police Service role.
anEDGE’s Toronto Police Service interview preparation will develop your competencies, allowing you to feel confident and well-prepared for the interview.
The S.T.A.R Format
The STAR interview approach is the format in which the Toronto Police wants you to answer the questions. This abbreviation denotes:
- Situation
- Task
- Action
- Result
These types of questions typically start with prompts like “Describe a time when,” “What would you do if,” and “Provide an example of,” evaluating candidates’ ability to handle typical or challenging workplace scenarios.
Key Preparation Steps
- Review the OACP competencies thoroughly.
- Select specific competencies and think of situations or events where you’ve demonstrated those skills. It’s recommended that a few examples be prepared for each competency.
- Use the provided template to outline how you’ll share each situation with the interviewers.
- Be prepared to discuss examples for several competencies, but don’t memorize your answers. Instead, focus on organizing your thoughts to convey your role and actions.

If you are serious about a career in law enforcement, then look no further because the team at AnEDGE has been an incredible help. If you have a lot of good work and life experience it can be difficult at times articulating the competencies Law Enforcement agencies look for in the STAR format. Thanks to anEDGE I felt I was well prepared going into every interview and had the best support at every step of the process. They were very flexible and accommodating in scheduling times to meet over teams. I cannot thank Gerald, Kevin, and the entire team enough for their support.

Grant From Manitoba – if you are motivated to begin your career in policing and know you have great work/life experience but are not sure how to articulate your competencies in the STAR format, you’ve come to the right place. I reached out to anEDGE, thinking I had weeks to prepare, and found out days later my interview would be in 7 days. I was still trying to figure out if I should spend the money on the process. I have to say that the decision to work with Kevin and Paul offered invaluable advice and assistance in preparing for the RCMP interview. If you have any doubt, take advantage of the free consultation and you will not regret it—best of luck to all applicants and many thanks to Kevin and Paul at anEDGE.
